Michael Amato has held senior positions in the Obama administration, Congress, city government and has consulted for large non-profit and advocacy organizations. He brings significant strategic, political, public affairs and crisis communications experience to CLS Strategies.
Following one of the largest data breaches in U.S. government history, Amato was appointed by the Obama administration to serve as the Director of Communications for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). In that role, he led the crisis communications and rapid response efforts and crafted and implemented strategies to help repair the agency’s reputation. Amato focused on the agency’s internal and external communications, including all press, digital and social media platforms. He also served as a senior advisor to the OPM director. This experience deepens CLS Strategies’ expertise in crisis communications, as well as issues involving data security.
Prior to OPM, Amato was the Communications Director for the minority on the House Armed Services Committee, where he served as chief spokesman for the Committee’s Ranking Member, advised and coordinated messaging for minority members of the committee and developed and implemented communications strategies on national security and foreign policy matters. He was also responsible for several key committee policy areas, including the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, the U.S. Northern and Southern Commands and the counter-narcotics portfolio.
Mike also worked to support and coordinated messaging around the Select Committee on Benghazi.
In addition, Mike served as Communications Director for Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA). In that role, Amato led all facets of communications for the member’s personal office including managing digital and social media, developing local, statewide, and national communications strategies, coordinating interview and media appearance preparation and implementing mail campaigns.
Amato has also worked as a communications consultant to non-profits and advocacy organizations and as the Assistant Press Secretary for Philadelphia Mayor John Street. Mike is from Philadelphia and graduated from Temple University. He and his wife live in the District of Columbia.
