Intern Spotlight: Candace Herada

Candace is a senior at the George Washington University with a dual concentration in Marketing and Business Analytics. She is originally from Hamilton, New Jersey. Last summer, she studied abroad at the London School of Economics. She enjoys living in the city of DC but hopes to one day live abroad, perhaps in London again someday.

  1. Who/what has had the most impact on your academic or professional interests?

I have had many impactful experiences and professors that have influenced my academic and professional interests over the years. One professor expanded my interest in data analytics named Professor Ashely, who manages Marketing Research through focus groups, interviews, data collection and analysis. In her class, I worked on one of my favorite projects in college in her class, which involved creating a start-up business in the Foggy Bottom area.

  1. What do you look for in an internship experience, and how has this shaped your career goals?

I look for internships that will provide hands-on experience and where I can collaborate and learn from the company and people around me. I enjoy being challenged to gain new skills.

  1. What are your long-term career goals?

I love to work in marketing and communications, but I’m not exactly sure where that will lead me just yet. However, I do know that I would like to work overseas one day.

  1. What has surprised you so far about your journey towards your career goals?

Throughout my classes and previous internships, I realized that research and data analysis are used constantly to understand the market, which lead me to declare my dual concentration in Business Analytics.

  1. Can you expand on your interest in public relations?

I have not dealt much with public relations previously, but I have used my knowledge of communications to aid in my work here. I believe that strategic communications developed from PR, and it is critical in determining how to best build or protect a company’s image.

  1. What comes easiest to you as an intern at CLS Strategies?

I find that diving into research for each client has come easiest to me as I learn more about each account and the trends around them.

  1. What has been your biggest challenge as an intern at CLS Strategies? How do you address that?

Balancing out and remembering what is needed for each of the five accounts I am working with has been a challenge. The best way to address the diverse needs of each account has been to write down everything I need to remember to keep myself on track.

  1. What is your favorite thing about living in Washington, D.C.?

My favorite thing about living in D.C. is that everything is pretty much within walking distance or a short metro ride away. Who needs cars and parallel parking anyway?

  1. On our website, we ask all of our staff to share three things about themselves. What are three things about yourself that we might not know?
  1. I have been a dancer for 14 years and was in a music video
  2. I am a huge Disney nerd
  3. I am Japanese and Mexican
