Defense and National Security Expert David Romley Joins CLS Strategies as Senior Advisor

WASHINGTON, D.C.— CLS Strategies announced today that David Romley, former Department of Defense Spokesperson and press attaché to the Secretary of Defense, has joined the firm as a Senior Advisor. Romley brings decades of experience in the defense and national security sectors that will enhance CLS Strategies’ offerings to provide strategic counsel and communications support to companies, governments and political leaders around the globe.

“David’s counsel is sought-after and respected by many in the national security and defense sectors,” said CLS Strategies Partner Brian Berry. “He’s a top-notch professional whose experience and expertise in the national security and defense apparatus is unmatched within the Washington public affairs arena. We couldn’t be more excited about having David team up with CLS Strategies to guide and advise our clients.”

Most recently, Romley served as Senior Vice President at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). As a member of the Center's executive team, he led its fundraising efforts, strategic partnerships, media relations, and overall external relations and brand position for the organization. Prior to joining CNAS, Romley served as Vice President for Development and Communications at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

“CLS Strategies has a sophisticated understanding of the D.C. policy environment and it places a priority on offering personal and tailored approaches to its practices, which is why I am excited to be part of this team,” said CLS Senior Advisor David Romley.

During his career, Romley also served 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a public affairs officer, where he was a press attaché to the Secretary of Defense and a Pentagon spokesman. He was senior Marine spokesman during combat operations in Afghanistan for General Jim Mattis and Task Force-58, and in Iraq he authored the combined Marine Corps and British Royal Commando communications plan to integrate more than 340 news media representatives into combat operations. As Director of Community Relations for the Marine Corps, he established its trademark and license office and created the Marine Corps’ signature public outreach and community relations campaign, Marine Week.

Romley is also Managing Partner of DTR Communications, his own communications consultancy that operates “at the intersection of policy, politics, and press.” He was Military Affairs fellow to former Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and is the recipient of the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star and the Anti-Defamation League’s Global Leadership Award. He was the Defense Department’s distinguished graduate in communications at the University of Oklahoma, where he received his master’s degree. He received his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Arizona.
